Draft Basic Assessment Report (BAR) for Project 28(1) MDRG
HilLand Environmental (Pty) Ltd, independent Environmental Assessment Practitioners (EAPs), have been appointed by the WEC Consult as the consulting engineers representing George Municipality, to ensure compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA, No. 107 of 1998, as amended) and Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 (as amended). A Basic Assessment process will be undertaken for listed activities triggered by the maintenance of the stormwater infrastructure part of the stormwater maintenance and management for the sites identified in the Project 28(1) in George Municipal area.
The Municipality filed an application for funding in the form of a disaster Grant to restore damage done to existing stormwater and other infrastructure, or where erosion is threatening municipal infrastructure that will impact on service delivery. Damage was caused by the severe weather events of Nov/Dec 2021 and the damage has been ongoing in every subsequent rain event, up to and including the recent flooding April 2024.
The funding was approved in March 2023. The heavy rainfall during 2023 and 2024 has exacerbated the erosion already occurring and urgent remedial work is required.
Flood damaged sites were recorded, surveyed, engineering proposals and remedial works proposed.
- Sites subject to NEMA BAR process – 2, 69 and 77
- Sites 1, 37 and 115-120 are covered by an MMP which has been submitted for adoption
- All other sites indicated are confirmed to not require NEMA or MMP approvals but are covered by the general Duty of Care in terms of NEMA
