Proposed Upgrading and Replacing of a section of the Hornlee Sewerage Pipeline, Hornlee, Knysna
HilLand Environmental have been appointed as the environmental assessment practitioners (EAP) by, SMEC South Africa, on behalf of the Applicant, Knysna Municipality, to ensure compliance with the regulations contained in the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA, No 107 of 1998), Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 and the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998, as amended) for the proposed upgrading and replacing of a section of Hornlee sewerage pipeline, Hornlee, Knysna.
Knysna Municipality wants to upgrade and replace a section of the sewerage pipeline that is crossing the Bigai stream tributary to the Knysna Estuary at two locations and runs adjacent to the dry watercourse for approximately 600m. The existing sewerage pipeline is damage at various points that frequently blocks and discharges untreated sewerage into the watercourse. This has a negative effect on the aquatic ecosystem health and it poses a significant risk to human and animal health.
The new pipeline will cross the Bigai watercourse at two locations, upstream where it will be buried underground and downstream where it will be attached to the pedestrian bridge crossing the river. The existing sewerage pipeline consists of various materials and diameters ranging from 150mm to 215mm and will be replaced with a 315mm diameter uPVC pipeline. The downstream crossing currently consists of a 300mm diameter asbestos pipeline and will be replaced with a 350mm galvanised steel pipe.
Construction work will commence in terms of a Directive issued by the Breede-Gouritz Catchment Management Agency in terms of Section 19 of the NWA, 36 of 1998 (as amended).
