Proposed Doornfontein Sandmine
Notice is hereby given in terms of Section 24 (5) of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA, 107 of 1998); and Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 in respect of activities that have been triggered in terms of Regulations No. R.983 of the NEMA act and by Applications in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (as amended). Application for Environmental Authorisation is made at the Department of Mineral Resources. This application is subject to a public participation process.
Background on activity: A 5ha area is proposed to be mined of sand. The mining area is to be divided into 5 equally sized blocks that will be mined consecutively and rehabilitated before proceeding to the next block. Sand will be minded as per demand and no stockpiling of the resource will occur on site. The boundary of the mining area is to be demarcated with wooden droppers connected by twine and danger tape flagging to ensure that no encroachement occurs into the surrounding areas. A single frontloader machine (TLB) is to be stored at the farmer’s storage area after hours and when sand is not required. The proposed sandmine is to undergo an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process and an application for temporary departure.
