HilLand Environmental, independent Environmental Assessment Practitioners (EAPs), have been appointed by Hotel 55 (Pty) Ltd, to ensure compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA, No. 107 of 1998, as amended) and Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations (2014, as amended).

Portion 29 of Farm 585 (here after referred to as ‘the property’) is situated in the Mier area west of the Botswana border and south of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Environmental authorisation (EA) and planning approval have been granted in 2024 for the development of an eco-resort, which included the construction of a 1.4km airstrip. Construction of the airstrip commenced, but operational experience revealed that the approved length is insufficient for safe aircraft take-off and landing during extreme Kalahari heat conditions.

The proposal is to extend the airstrip another 700m. The total length of the airstrip will therefore increase from 1.4km to 2.1km which provides enough length for aircraft to take off and land during extreme heat conditions. The entire length will be concrete with turning aprons on both ends as originally included in the design. This modification ensures safe operations under high-temperature conditions.

In terms of Regulations 3(4) & 40 of the NEMA EIA Regulations (2014, as amended) to notify you of the availability of the Draft Basic Assessment Report (BAR) for its 30-day commenting period (10 April – 12 May 2026).
