Maintenance Management Plan (MMP) for the remedial works and maintenance of the existing stormwater erosion taking place on the Remainder of Erf 2690 (public place), adjacent to Bay Dunes Development, Mossel Bay

23 July 2021 – 26 August 2021

HilLand Environmental, independent Environmental Assessment Practitioners (EAPs), have been appointed by the applicant, Baydunes Body Corporate, on behalf of the Mossel Bay Municipality, to produce a Maintenance Management Plan (MMP) for the remedial repair works and ongoing maintenance of existing stormwater outlets on municipal property Erf RE/2690, adjacent to Baydunes Development/Complex, Mossel Bay.  This will ensure compliance with the regulations contained in the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA, No. 107 of 1998, as amended) and Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 (as amended).

All remedial work is to be done on the municipal property adjacent to Baydunes, above the high-water mark of the ocean and not near the small rivermouth.

Storm water runoff water from Baydunes streets is collected in storm water pipes which discharge into the sand dunes. The headwalls and pipes at both outlets have been eroded and a channel has been carved into the dune which now undermines the storm water outlet structures. Severe erosion is evident and if not maintained at this point will result in serious damage to the stormwater system and surrounding infrastructure.  Temporary sandbags have been placed to prevent the continuation of the erosion, however the remedial works need to be undertaken to prevent long term damage.

Remedial works include the installation of reno-mattresses and gabion baskets which will prevent erosion and encourage the infiltration of the water into the dune system without causing any erosion. The MMP covers the work require and the long term maintenance of the system to prevent damage in future.

The Maintenance Management Plan (MMP) will undergo a 30-day commenting period commencing on the 26th of July 2021. In terms of Regulation 3 (4) and 40 of NEMA: EIA Regulations (2014, as amended) you are hereby advised that you have 30-days from the 26th of July 2021 to submit any comments. Please provide us with your comments / concerns relating to the MMP during the timeframe (26 July 2021 – 26 August 2021) in written format via email.
